T H WHITE’s Technical Manager Simon Holmes has long been a champion of apprentice engineers for our sectors of Agriculture, Dairy, Construction and Groundcare but his latest efforts in engaging an MP in the subject, really live up to the trailblazing name of the group he co-chairs.

The Land Based Service Engineering (LBSE) Apprenticeship Trailblazer group was established way back when apprenticeship standards were being set.  Simon joined the group as an employer representative in 2022 and stepped up to co-chair shortly afterwards.  He co-chairs alongside David Kirschner, an independent consultant for the Land Based industry with a background working for the initial Fendt tractor importer and Renault Agriculture.  This employer-led group consists of employers, manufacturers, training providers and assessment organisations throughout England and David represents the coalition of industry bodies that form LE-TEC (AEA, BAGMA & IAgriE).

The group was formed to represent land-based service engineering. They review the Level 2 & 3 LBSE apprenticeship standards to ensure that they are fit for purpose for the next 5 years.

The parties reviewed and audited the provision for upcoming apprentices and highlighting several critical issues in their proposals.  These being:

1. The amount of funding for such a complex apprenticeship is low, risking more colleges pulling out of the sector.
   
2. The funding is driving down wages of lecturing staff, meaning that skilled knowledgeable people are not attracted to our sector. The knock-on effect is the quality of delivery is lowered and there is no succession planning by these colleges as they are working hand to mouth.
   
3. Across all apprenticeships the levy fee is not fully utilised, meaning that the surplus is taken back by the government, but not reinvested into apprenticeships.
   

Earlier this year a conservative MP Nick Fletcher championed this very topic with a 20 second TikTok video promoting access to LBSE apprenticeships in the simple and engaging manner.  He stood in front of a Case IH tractor and highlighted the skill set and satisfaction of mending or servicing it.  Take a look – https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGehAmwoL/

Simon wrote to Nick Fletcher to thank him, and invited him to a meeting to learn more.  With Nick’s constituency in Yorkshire, Simon didn’t anticipate a response but was thrilled with a quick reply to meet.  So last week in Bawtry, South Yorkshire, Simon and Nick overran their initial time slot engaged in fruitful discussion around how the LBSE apprenticeship pathways could prosper.  Nick then sent back his Assistant, Andrew Issacs, to continue the discussions and our Government colleagues left with a commitment to share an understanding of these issues.

We are delighted to have received such engagement from Nick Fletcher MP and Andrew Issacs.  We are hopeful of these discussions prompting a review in policy.  Well done to Simon and David for continuing to shine a light on such as important career pathway for our younger generation and thank you to our government colleagues in anticipation of ongoing engagement.

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Manitou Ride and Drive event, held on November 15th and 16th at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire. The 2 day event was the perfect opportunity for existing and future Manitou operators to get hands on with a number of machines.

Over the two-day event, we proudly displayed nearly 20 cutting-edge Manitou machines, featuring a diverse range of agricultural telehandlers, construction telehandlers, and industrial forklifts. The Three Counties Showground provided the perfect backdrop for visitors and industry professionals to explore and experience the latest innovations in Manitou technology.

The event saw the presence of T H WHITE’s dedicated sales representatives alongside Manitou experts from Manitou UK. Their insightful guidance allowed attendees to gain in-depth knowledge about the showcased machines, providing a comprehensive understanding of their capabilities and applications.

Showcasing Excellence

A number of the most popular machines were on show throughout the day covering all sectors from Agriculture, Construction to Industry.

The Agricultural sector was represented by the MLT737 and MLT625 to name just a few. A selection of the Agricultural spec telehandlers on the day showcased various attachments from bale grabs, buckets, muck grabs and more. The ULM (ultra light machine) was also available on the day.

The Construction sector was represented by the MRT2660 complete with remote control system, giving drivers the option to operate the machine from outside or inside the cab. Demonstrating some of the cutting-edge features that define Manitous commitment to innovation. Completing the Construction line up was the 10m MT1033 and popular MT635 amongst others.

Over to the Industrial sector, we showcased the MI25D and MI30D forklifts as well as a selection of pallet trucks including the EP15 lithium powered truck.

While the industry is generally moving to Stage V engines, Doosan has taken the process even further without any detriment to performance. Doosan’s new D34 4-cylinder Stage V diesel engine not only delivers 87.2 kW (117hp) at 2000rpm, but it exceeds Stage V regulations without Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). That boosts the quantity of air available during combustion, increasing the temperature of the process and greatly reducing the amount of particulates produced. The enhanced fuel efficiency of the D34 engine in combination with a new hydraulic main valve and the new generation SPC3 Smart Power Controls, provides significant fuel savings.

The Doosan DX140LCR-7 is a reduced tail swing model.

The 14.6 tonne DX140LC-7 is the standard model, while the DX140LCR-7 is a reduced tail swing model, allowing operators greater flexibility where space is at a premium without sacrificing performance. With a passion for cars, motorcycles and BIG machines, James Bird couldn’t be in a better job.  Not so long ago, while he was running his own business, he sold a used 100-ton Caterpillar face shovel excavator to a South American client in Columbia for £250,000 – certainly a landmark sale. Now, as a senior salesman with the T H WHITE Construction team at Stourport-on-Severn, his daily stock-in-trade is now somewhat more modest machinery, but he still has big opportunities with Manitou MRT rotating turret handlers, Dooosan DX800 80 tonne excavators and Doosan DA45 ADT’s.

Nevertheless, with more than 24 years’ experience in the construction industry he knows the business inside out and has first-hand experience of many major brands including Caterpillar, Volvo, Komatsu, Hitachi, Kubota, Bell, Case, Terex (now Mecalac), Manitou and Doosan.

“We are in very exciting times.” says James, “The whole construction equipment sector stands on the brink of a technological revolution. It started with GPS guided machines and laser guided tools, and now we are starting to see autonomous machines. Before long we are likely to be using machinery controlled by robots or GPS without the need for human operators at all!”

James joined Murley at Stourport in 2016 and last year the business became part of the T H WHITE Group. “There have already been some significant changes to the Construction Division with increased focus and scale being brought to the operation. So far the customers have reacted very positively and we are on a mission to deliver even better customer support with new facilities at Stourport.”

As you might expect in a 24-year career so far, James has had a few interesting and unusual experiences. “I’ll never forget one meeting I had with a customer in Iceland. We met each other in the Blue Lagoon – a naturally heated pool next to a geothermic power plant!

“One of the most satisfying things is when you can supply a customer with a machine that makes a really positive difference to their business. A few years ago I sold a brand new rotation Manitou telehandler to Jaguar Land Rover – it proved to be the ideal machine for removing robots from the production line if they go down, so is a crucial element in keeping production lines running smoothly.

“Of course, there have been many changes, even in the last few years. More constricted construction sites with less room for manoeuvrability have resulted in a trend towards zero and reduced tail swing excavators, but the most noticeable developments have been not only in the general efficiency of machines, but also operator safety. Environmental awareness has played a big part too, with fuel economy and emissions reduction being achieved at a more rapid pace than ever.”

Off duty, as well as being a petrol head, James enjoys shooting and watching his favourite football team – Nottingham Forest.

As building contractors have to work in ever-tighter spaces there is a growing demand for machines which are more compact without sacrificing lift height or lifting capacity. Manitou has risen to the challenge with its new MT730 and MT930 telehandlers which are just 2m wide and 2m tall – small enough to fit through a domestic garage door – but still capable of lifting 3 tonnes to 7m or 9m respectively.

A powerful 75hp Kubota Stage V engine is paired with 25kph hydrostatic transmission. There are three steering modes – 4-wheel steer, 2-wheel steer and ‘crab’, while 34.5cm ground clearance and a 3.33m turning radius equip these machines for all terrain and the tightest of spaces.

Achieving extremely low running costs has always been a priority for the Manitou designers and the MT730/MT930 can be fitted with a new stop-start system which can be programmed to operate when the engine has been idling for anything from 1 minute to 30 minutes. The reduction in idling time minimises wear and noise, as well as prolonging intervals between DPF regeneration. The need to change hydraulic oil can also be more strictly controlled, thanks to easy access points for collecting oil samples for analysis.

Mecalac raised the bar for dumper design with the recent launch of its 3.5-tonne 3.5MDX which set new standards of safety, comfort, and performance. Mecalac has followed this up with all new six-tonne 6MDX and nine-tonne 9MDX models.

Both new models can now be specified with state-of-the-art hydrostatic transmission to replace mechanical transmission with fixed gear ratios. This ensures easier operations without gear shifting and provides the added benefit of responsive dynamic braking, making operation easier and safer for both experienced and new operators – perfect for both rental fleets and operators who frequently change their equipment. An order for 11 large excavators is significant by any measure, but even more so when it is placed by a new customer. 

Redditch-based RM Contractors have been in business for 27 years, providing site preparation and groundworks for some of Britain’s leading housebuilders. Earlier this month, we welcomed three members of the Manitou Sales & Demo team to our Knockdown branch, where we hosted our first Manitou Telehandler installation training day. Being the first of its kind for Manitou, their objective was to equip our technicians with a comprehensive knowledge to improve the hand over experience of new machines, and to ensure that our customers get the best out of their equipment.

One technician from each of our Agriculture and Construction branches attended the training,  plus our Chief Demonstrator: Mike Quilter. For the safety of everyone, each attendee produced evidence of a negative Lateral Flow test before entering the building.

The training was led by Richard Felton, Anthony Hogben & Jim Hulme from the Manitou Sales & Demo team, whereby they delivered three different modules covering machine operation features; telematics and supporting material access.

An important feature of the training was to ensure our technicians know how to efficiently use Manitou Group’s “Connected Machine” solutions, which are accessible via a suite of tools adapted to each individual’s needs: myManitou Mobile App, designed for the end user; and/or the EasyMANAGER fleet management platform dedicated to managers of several pieces of equipment.

Our technicians were shown how to synchronise the customers machine to the MyManitou app, to make use of the telematics feature that is fitted to every Manitou product that we sell. The “Connected Machine” solutions allow our customers to monitor key indicators about their machine including; fuel level, AdBlue level, hour counter and time to next service. The platforms also work as a fleet management tool, allowing our customers to set a basic geofence around their machines, which generates a notification if a machine moves out of a defined area. All of this information is accessible by our trained technicians, who have real-time access to the data to assist in early maintenance and remote support, plus reducing total cost of ownership and downtime.

The modern construction machine is rarely owned and operated by the same person. It could be part of a contractor’s or hire fleet, or operated by a farm manager on behalf of the owner.

In many cases the owner does not see the machine from one month to the next, but he/she does want to know where it is, how much work it does each day, and when it needs to be serviced. The Manitou ‘Connected Machine’ system provides fleet managers with this, and more, information via their own dashboard on a PC or mobile phone App. What’s more, it has been a standard feature on all compatible machines manufactured since January 2019.

Firstly, Connected Machines include a tracker which constantly communicates the machine’s location to the fleet manager. It is also possible to Geofence the machine to send an alert if it moves out of the expected operating area. Even the baby of the New Holland compact track loader range, the L213 shown at work here, has the best class dump height and reach in the business. The redesigned vertical lift geometry of the SUPER BOOM^® enables operators to load material right in the centre of the truck bed. In addition, its pivot point is very close to the machine’s centre of gravity, resulting in exceptional stability of the machine at work.

The Manitou MT625-109 is a utility all-purpose machine from Manitou’s Construction Telehandler range with 5.85m lift and 2,500kg payload.

One of the beefiest rotating telehandlers in the Manitou range – the MRT 2550 Privilege Plus – has been added to the plant list at Scottish-based Graph Engineering.

Managing Director George Auld is looking forward to working with the new machine, which was supplied by T H WHITE Construction in mid-February and was put to work straight away on a malting site in East Lothian – a job for which T H WHITE Projects supplied the silos. 

With a company history stretching back more than 25 years, Graph Engineering has worked extensively on industrial and grain handling installations across the UK, Europe, Ireland and even in the Orkney Islands, many of the commissions being undertaken with 

T H WHITE Projects. It was to meet the demands of these larger installations that George bought the MRT 2550. He is a long-term user of Manitou telehandlers and he already has a heavy duty 3.7-tonne lift MRT 2150 in his fleet as well as an MT 625 purchased from T H WHITE a couple of years ago for lighter work.

“We love the durability and reliability of Manitou machines,” said George, “and the 5 tonne capacity plus 25m lift of the MRT 2550 will be a real advantage for installation of steelwork and conveyors.

“In many applications we will be able to use the MRT 2550 as a crane by adding a winch which will give us an extra 4m lift – and up to 7m for lifting lighter loads. The boom on the MRT 2550 comprises four elements which, combined with the 360deg rotation of the turret, allows many operations to be performed without moving the equipment. The E-reco attachment recognition system keeps an eye on the working configuration to detect any overload and make sure that everything stays within the safe working envelope. The machine is essentially a forklift, crane and access platform all in one”

After many years as an official dealer for Manitou loaders, T H WHITE has now also been appointed as a dealer for the French company’s innovative range of access and aerial work platforms.

Making it easy and safe to access hard-to-reach places, Manitou’s aerial platforms are offered in a variety of configurations. Depending on the application, the most appropriate solution might be a platform with a long-reach articulated or telescopic boom, or straight lifts in more confined spaces might call for a ‘scissor’ lift or a vertical mast.

Starting with the compact 80 VJR vertical mast model which has a working height of 7.65m (25ft), the range includes many configurations right up to the brawny telescopic boom 280 TJ which can reach a working height of 27.75m (91ft) while lifting a payload of 240kg (529lb). Where heavier loads need to be lifted the scissor-lift models come into their own, the 100 SC having a lifting capacity up to 680kg (1,500lb). The models are variously offered with diesel, electric or hybrid power.

Construction, installation and repair tasks are the obvious applications for Manitou aerial work platforms and indeed they are sold through T H WHITE Construction, but there are many other uses too. For example, the ever-increasing size of agricultural machinery such as combine and forage harvesters means that an aerial platform can make it much easier to access higher level inspection panels and parts. We have recently been using a Manitou 100 VJR when working on combine harvesters in our Marlborough depot (see photo).

Manitou’s new pivot-steer telehandler, the MLA-T, combines bags of sheer tear-out force with exceptional levels of comfort and durability, and is available now from T H WHITE Agriculture and Construction.

Designed in-house from the ground-up, the MLA-T features a tighter turning circle than competing machines and, unlike many pivot-steer handlers, it shuns standard torque converter transmission for Manitou’s own hydrostatic M-Vario Plus transmission, which is more commonly found on higher-spec, rigid-frame machines.

Powered by a Deutz 4.1-litre, 143hp diesel engine, the MLA-T has plenty of ‘grunt’ for all the construction and agricultural tasks that it will be required to perform. On the road it can be driven at up to 40kph, but a number of advanced technologies are built-in to deliver maximum power at slow speeds with the engine driving two separate axial piston motors, one of which is automatically disengaged above 20kph to reduce oil displacement, assist cooling and reduce fuel consumption.

An eco-mode can also result in a fuel cost saving of around £440 over 1,000 hours when full power isn’t needed.

Built for hard work in harsh environments, the MLA-T features a heavy chassis with widely spaced top and bottom pins to mitigate stress on the pivot joint and the prop shaft runs inside the chassis for maximum protection.

Matching equivalent rigid machines, the MLA-T can lift 3.3t at full articulation and up to 5t for a straight tipping load, while optional ‘intelligent’ hydraulics offer three most useful automated functions – Quick Lift which combines raising/lowering with extension/retraction; Bucket Shaker saves the operator from making repetitive movements; and Return to Load to automatically return to a pre-set position.

Completing the package is a comfortable working environment and brand new cab design with easy control via a JSM joystick and a digital display dash. Maintenance is easy thanks to a central greasing block.
